Dealing with Overwhelm in Your Career
Dealing with overwhelm is no joke. The feeling of overwhelm takes over our mental and physical states leaving us feeling anxious, stressed, or nervous. Whether you are dealing with the stress of business or the day-to-day stress of your day job, there are several ways to help you re-center yourself and maintain focus.
Dealing with Overwhelm
The first effective strategy to deal with overwhelm is to narrow down where the feeling of overwhelm is coming from. Do you feel overwhelmed because you are stressed out? Do you feel overwhelmed because you are dealing with other problems (personal or business)? Do you feel overwhelmed because you are in information overload?
Stepping Away from Feeling Overwhelmed
Once you consider the cause of your feeling of overwhelm, stop. It’s okay to pause throughout the work day and re-center yourself. Often times, working from a place of overwhelm is not productive anyway and we end up losing precious work hours.
Once you step away, practice an activity that will help you re-center with yourself. The idea of focussing on yourself helps allow you to understand your priorities and work from a place that is most beneficial to you. Think of it this way, if you practice a strong morning routine you understand that benefits of starting your day after you have taken care of your personal priorities. It encourages you to have strong mental health, which in turn makes it easier to prioritize tasks that day and work productively.
Some activities to help you deal with overwhelm may include taking five minutes to meditate and allow yourself time to truly observe your thoughts about your current situation. Another idea is to free write. This will help let your feelings just happen and providing them the space to exist. One last example is to practice affirmations. Bring yourself into your beliefs and what you want by affirming what you are. Each of these activities allows a moment for you to breath, refocus on yourself, and bring your priorities forward. Take care of yourself mentally before returning to your physical work.
Returning to Work With a Clear Mind
Return to your task feeling refreshed and clear minded. You took a moment to focus on yourself and most importantly you allowed yourself to express and observe the way you felt. You will feel the ways in which mentally caring for yourself will strongly impact your physical work. You are returning from a new starting point that allowed you to take the next step forward after you cared for yourself.
The feeling of business overwhelm can paralyze you and your work work ethic. There are several strategies you can practice to deal with overwhelm, just remember to take a moment to pause to prioritize yourself and return to your work from a fresh starting point.
